Vocabulary Improvement Technique #2 - A Simple Strategy That Will Double The Effectiveness Of Repetition

The old saying "practice makes perfect", rings very true for vocabulary building. Studies show that rehearsal dramatically improves long term memory. In fact, it takes between 10 and 20 repetitions to make a word part of your vocabulary. What's even more surprising is that rehearsing a word, even after you believe you have mastered it, can double the effectiveness of your learning, greatly reducing the chance that you will forget the word in the future.

Using repetition to improve your vocabulary

To use repetition to increase your vocabulary you will find it helpful to keep a list of words you want to learn and make a pact with yourself to read over the list every day. Once you have mastered a word, wait an additional week before you tick it off the list. This "over-rehearsing" will ensure the word isn't easily forgotten. Also, try and fit the words on your list into your conversation or passing thoughts and soon you will find they come to mind naturally.

Repetition with Ultimate Vocabulary

If you are currently using Ultimate Vocabulary, use Word Messenger to periodically remind you of words as you work. This will allow you to supplement your initial learning with repetition. Word Messenger will periodically pop up a word and definition in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. When this occurs, be sure to read the word and definition. If you want more information on the word choose "view word info".
