Using Your Business Vocabulary

Any thing you set out to do will require communicating with someone else to achieve your goals and gain value. Whenever you speak, the way you speak, the vocabulary you use and the syntax of your speech tells the listener a lot about you.  The listener will make a judgment, be it subliminal or conscious, about your level of education and intelligence.  You have probably done this many times yourself.  It is as important as body language in our assessment of each other.

The most important reason for wanting to improve your business vocabulary is no doubt to assist you with increasing your work opportunities and communication in your business environment.  Another strong motivator is the sense of achievement and self worth gained by fully comprehending and communicating in the business world and your home / social world.  A misunderstanding in the context of language cannot only be frustrating and embarrassing but can cause errors in judgment with ongoing damaging effect.

If you are reading this book you have a desire to improve your vocabulary and understanding of words.  The first step is to improve your basic vocabulary relating to your area of business.  Read widely, industry magazines, the internet and talk to and listen to colleagues.  Book yourself in to some industry seminars where you will meet and interact with similarly focused people.  Keep a small notebook to write down new words or acronyms and then research these fully, including examples of application.  This will maintain a record for future reference.  Seek out good vocabulary software that will give you discipline in your learning process.  Before you know it you will have an impressive command of the language and your colleagues will be paying full attention to what you say.

Good communication does make a difference – it is a way for you to stand out from the crowd.

The approach that might seal the deal with one customer might be the deal breaker with another. The more practiced you are at listening and responding appropriately in a discussion, the more successes you will have. Whether your success is the next great job, sale of a product, or successful product launch; the words you use will have a major influence on the success or failure of your goal. Your words may come back to haunt you, so choose them wisely.
