Vocabulary depicts the users command on the language. It represents a group of words which the user has learnt throughout the course of his life. Many people do not face difficulty while speaking their native language because they are raised with that language. People learning new languages such as English should develop vocabulary from scratch. Vocabulary should involve learning words which will be used while writing and speaking of the language.
Vocabulary usage is important as it decides the appropriate usage of English. Students having English as their second language should concentrate learning spellings. Spellings form an important part of language because they determine the users command on language. People generally ignore learning spellings due to presence of spell checkers in modern day software`s. Relative usage of paper based writing is becoming lesser and lesser day by day and reliance on computer based spreadsheets for faster processing.
Learning to write appropriate spellings is entirely dependent on the user. Usage of writing vocabulary is based upon the user’s knowledge. Writing vocabulary is simulated by the user knowledge. There are two types of vocabulary passive and active. Passive usage of vocabulary occurs when a user understands the words. When we hear new words and implement them it encompasses passive voices. Active vocabulary occurs when a user’s unconscious mind automatically searches and imparts the word into the relevant context or sentence. A user in active phase of vocabulary will not grasp for words.
Correct spellings aid in appropriate expression and communication. Linguistic vocabulary is directly related to thinking vocabulary. The way we pronounce a word depicts the user’s knowledge on phonetics and English as such. A person is judged based on his vocabulary and his usage of vocabulary in writing.
Charles Kay Ogden has created approximately 850 Basic English words. These words form an important part of English vocabulary. When a user learns these Basic English words he can express his thoughts much more accurately. There are other lists such as Simplified and special English words. Another well known and famous person known as Michael West has created 2000 high frequency words from a corpus of 5, 000,000 words which form the basic structure of English. When a user learns these words he can read, write, understand and speak English with ease.
Users should also understand basic structure of English language such as verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc. These define the context in which these words should be used. Understanding these basic concepts will improve the users English to a certain extent.
