Many greater authors and scholars learned vocabulary in a progressing manner which is step by step and not all words in a single day. If you try to learn many words on a single day without considering your potential then there are chances that you will not remember the context in which you should use those words, this is very important when writing essay section of the GRE.
Vocabulary trees: -Vocabulary trees are very interesting and effective. In a vocabulary tree you learn a single word and relate as many words as you can to that single word.
For example when you say, hear or write the word Building your consciousness should automatically relate to hospitals, libraries, apartments, complexes, malls, etc.
In this way you will learn many words and also context of that word. When this process is applied you will be able to learn many words in a single instance without much problem or pain trying to remember many words.
In the argument section of the GRE you have to answer to an argument citing why your point of view of the argument is stronger than the other. In this section primarily you need to learn words which stress the point of view such as impugn, chimerical, flummox, aegis, nescience, etc. Chances are that you may not know the meaning to those words. If you have thought that you know English think again. You may not know the meaning to these and many more words but the evaluator certainly knows about these words and he/she will certainly appreciate your effort if you use polished language words. This is the primary reason to develop your vocabulary because it can fetch you a good score and help you when you move to English speaking countries.
Verbal Section is one of the most difficult parts because you need to remember the context, derive antonyms, complete sentences and read comprehension passage. In the verbal section one very important tool which you have is to eliminate choices from the options which have been provided to you. Vocabulary when learnt with context and relevance in a sentence can help you score higher. Roots, prefixes and suffixes of terms should be learnt as much as possible. Most of the words have alternate meaning and their nature changes according to the context, which should be known. Antonyms section has positive and negative connotation which can decipher the tone of the word by which you can pick up the right choice.
Flash cards are very helpful which should be with you at all times (not in the exam hall though).
